Coming to Malta from Colombia: Spanish-language jobs, the D visa, the agents to avoid

Colombians enter Schengen visa-free but need Malta's long-stay visa to work. No Maltese embassy in Colombia. Spanish customer-service jobs, hospitality, the no-fee rule.

Colombians in Malta cluster in two very different jobs: Spanish-language customer service for gaming and tech companies at €1,500 to €2,200, and hospitality near the minimum wage. Both routes run through the same permit, and both are sold at home by agents who have no role in it. Here is the real path.

Visa-free is not work-free

Your passport lets you enter the Schengen area as a visitor for up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. It does not let you work, and Identità refuses permit applications made from inside Malta on a tourist entry. The order is: contract, employer applies, approval in principle, then a long-stay (D) visa from home, then travel. The Single Permit guide covers the employer’s application step by step. Identità’s own policy: anyone staying longer than 90 days needs a long-stay visa before arrival, whatever the passport.

Where the visa comes from

Malta has no embassy in Colombia. Identità’s premium process for countries without a mission applies: email the Central Visa Unit with your approval in principle, receive a token, upload documents, pay €300 covering all fees, send your passport by courier, receive the visa in six to eight weeks. Check VFS Global’s Malta pages in case a centre is listed for Colombia. The Albania page covers the same courier process for Albanian passports.

The jobs Colombians take here

  • Customer service and sales in Spanish for gaming, fintech and tech support companies. Usually office jobs in Sliema, Gżira, St Julian’s and Ta’ Xbiex, with a salary that passes the family-reunification test faster than hospitality does. Some qualify for the Specialist Employee route at €30,000 if a degree and the job match.
  • Hospitality: waiting, bar, kitchen, housekeeping. Skills Pass required.
  • Care for the elderly, in homes and households, with the extra vaccination rules of the health screening.

English is required in every office job alongside Spanish. A B2 level opens doors; A2 closes them.

Life here

Latin American communities are growing fast, strongest in the Sliema, Gżira and St Julian’s belt where the offices are. Spanish-speaking colleagues from Venezuela, Spain, Argentina and Peru fill the same floors. Italian and English are the useful local languages.

The scam, Colombian version

Offers on TikTok and Instagram for “trabajo en Malta sin experiencia”, a WhatsApp recruiter, a “proceso de visa” fee in dollars, a “depósito de alojamiento”. The visa is issued by Identità’s Central Visa Unit for a fixed €300 all-in through the courier process, or at a visa centre with fees under €150; nothing else is a visa fee. Read the never-pay-an-agent guide, and run the verify-an-employer checks on any company before sending a passport scan. The Venezuela page covers the same pattern for Venezuelan workers.

The money

The minimum wage is €229.44 a week in 2026, about €994 a month. A room costs €450 to €700 a month. Run your own numbers in the salaries guide before you accept. A salary far above the ranges there is a red flag, not a prize.

What never happens

Nobody in Malta charges you for a job. Agencies here are licensed by DIER and commit an offence if they take money from an applicant. Employers may not take money from workers for recruitment. The permit fee is the employer’s. You pay the two official courses, your visa, your health tests and your flight, and nothing else.
