Coming to Malta from Brazil: the embassy, visa-free entry, Portuguese-language jobs

Malta has an embassy in Brazil. Visa-free entry does not allow work; the long-stay visa comes first. Portuguese customer service in gaming, hospitality, the no-fee rule.

Brazilians in Malta fill Portuguese-language customer-service floors in gaming and fintech, and hotel and restaurant jobs across the island. Malta has an embassy in Brazil, and your passport enters Schengen visa-free, which makes the route look easy. The permit is still the employer’s application, and the long-stay visa is still required before you travel to work.

Visa-free is not work-free

Your passport lets you enter the Schengen area as a visitor for up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. It does not let you work, and Identità refuses permit applications made from inside Malta on a tourist entry. The order is: contract, employer applies, approval in principle, long-stay (D) visa from Brazil, then travel. Identità’s policy: anyone staying longer than 90 days needs a long-stay visa before arrival, whatever the passport.

Where the visa comes from

Malta’s list of missions includes an Embassy of Malta in the Federative Republic of Brazil. Long-stay visa applications go through the embassy or a visa centre working for it; the decision is made by the Central Visa Unit at Identità. Check the embassy’s page for appointment rules. Six to eight weeks after the approval in principle.

The jobs Brazilians take here

  • Customer service, sales, content moderation and account management in Portuguese for gaming, payments and tech companies in Sliema, Gżira, St Julian’s and Ta’ Xbiex, at €1,500 to €2,200 and up. English at B2 is required alongside Portuguese.
  • Hospitality: waiting, bar, kitchen, housekeeping, with the Skills Pass.
  • IT and marketing for graduates, sometimes on the Specialist Employee route at €30,000 with a recognised degree.

Documents

Degrees through MQRIC; certificates for family reunification apostilled in Brazil and translated by a translator registered in Malta. Passport valid for more than eight months.

Life here

Brazilian communities are among the fastest-growing in Malta, concentrated along the office belt and in the central towns. Portuguese is a working language on many floors. Italian and English are the useful local languages. Catholic parishes and evangelical churches are easy to find.

The scam, Brazilian version

“Vaga em Malta” on Instagram, a recruiter on WhatsApp, a fee for “assessoria” or “processo de visto”. Legitimate help with documents exists, but no Maltese employer or authority charges a recruitment fee, and the visa fee is paid at the embassy or its centre, nowhere else. Read never-pay-an-agent, then verify the company with the Business Registry.

The money

The minimum wage is €229.44 a week in 2026, about €994 a month. A room costs €450 to €700 a month. Run your own numbers in the salaries guide before you accept. A salary far above the ranges there is a red flag, not a prize.

What never happens

Nobody in Malta charges you for a job. Agencies here are licensed by DIER and commit an offence if they take money from an applicant. Employers may not take money from workers for recruitment. The permit fee is the employer’s. You pay the two official courses, your visa, your health tests and your flight, and nothing else.
