EU citizens: why people move to Malta, what the jobs pay, and the tax questions

Gaming, finance, tech, language jobs and remote work bring EU citizens to Malta. No permit needed. Salaries against rent, the tax residence question, the Nomad permit.

EU citizens come to Malta for a job in gaming, finance or tech, for a customer-service job in their own language, or with a remote job and a wish for sun. None of them need a permit. What they need is a realistic view of pay against rent, and a clear answer to where they pay tax. Here it is.

The jobs

  • iGaming. Malta licenses a large share of Europe’s online betting and casino operators. Customer support in every EU language, compliance, payments, marketing, product, data, software. Entry at €1,500 to €2,200 for support; well above for specialists.
  • Finance and corporate services. Accounting, audit, fund administration, compliance, company services. Qualified accountants from €2,500 to €4,000 and up.
  • Tech. Development, QA, infrastructure, security, often for gaming and fintech firms, €2,500 to €4,500 and seniors above.
  • Language jobs. Italian, German, French, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Finnish, Portuguese: support, sales and content for companies serving those markets. The language is the qualification.
  • Hospitality and health. Italians in restaurants, nurses from everywhere; the same rules as for Maltese workers.
  • Remote work for a foreign employer. Legal for EU citizens with no permit, but tax residence follows you; see below.

What you give up

  • Rent at near-northern prices on a southern salary. A one-bedroom in Sliema is €1,000 to €1,500. Salaries against the cost of living has its own page.
  • Space. Twenty-seven kilometres of island and a lot of concrete.
  • Winter. Short, wet, and the houses are cold.

The first three months

Register with Identità after three months for the eResidence card, free. Jobsplus engagement form by your employer on day one. Social security and tax numbers. A bank account, which is quick for EU citizens with a contract and an address. The EU-citizens guide has the order.

Tax, in plain words

Work for a Maltese employer and tax is deducted at source under the 2026 bands: 0% to €12,000, 15% to €16,000, 25% to €60,000, 35% above, less the subtractions. Social security 10%, capped; the bands, PAYE and the FS3 are on their own page. Work remotely from Malta for a foreign employer for most of the year and you are likely tax resident in Malta, with the double-taxation treaty between Malta and your country deciding how it is split. Malta has special tax programmes for some categories of residents and highly qualified workers; they have conditions and minimums and are not automatic. The tax administration’s pages list them; a licensed tax adviser is worth one hour before you move, not after.

The Nomad Residence Permit

For non-EU remote workers, Residency Malta runs a Nomad Residence Permit with income conditions. EU citizens do not need it; freedom of movement covers them. Mentioned here because EU movers ask: your route is the eResidence card on a self-sufficiency or employment basis, nothing more.

Why people stay

English in every office, the sea on the way to work, a short flight to everywhere, a job market that hires fast and promotes faster than at home. Why people leave: rent, the heat in August, the size. Most know by month six. The honest pros and cons before you apply are on their own page.
