Coming to Malta from Egypt: the embassy, the D visa, the jobs and the agents
Malta has an embassy in Egypt. The employer applies and pays for the Single Permit. What Egyptians do in Malta, the health screening, legalised papers, the no-fee rule.

Egyptians work in Malta’s restaurants, hotels, shops, delivery fleets, construction and increasingly in customer service for Arabic-language accounts. Malta has an embassy in Egypt, so the visa step is direct. The permit itself is applied for and paid by the Maltese employer. The only fee you should ever meet is the visa’s.
Where the visa comes from
Malta’s list of missions includes an Embassy of Malta in the Arab Republic of Egypt. Long-stay visa applications go through the mission or a visa centre working for it; the decision is made by the Central Visa Unit at Identità. Check the embassy’s own page for appointment rules. Count six to eight weeks after the approval in principle.
Documents from Egypt
Marriage and birth certificates for family reunification must be legalised in Egypt and translated by a translator registered in Malta. Degrees for the Specialist Employee route go through MQRIC. A passport valid for more than eight months. Start legalisation early; it is slower than the Maltese side.
The jobs Egyptians take here
Kitchen and restaurant staff, hotel work, shop assistants, delivery riders and drivers, construction, barbers, and Arabic-language customer service in gaming and fintech. Hospitality needs the Tourism and Hospitality Skills Pass. Hairdressers, delivery staff and construction workers are screened in the health check whatever the country.
Life here
Arabic-speaking communities, Egyptian, Libyan, Syrian and Tunisian, are concentrated in the harbour towns, Msida, Gżira and the central area. Halal food is easy to find; the main mosque is in Paola. Maltese itself is a Semitic language with Arabic roots, which makes some words familiar, but English is the language of work.
The scam, Egyptian version
A “contract” sold in Cairo for thousands of euros, a WhatsApp HR, a fake offer from a real Maltese restaurant’s name. The never-pay-an-agent guide lists the red flags; the verify-an-employer guide shows how to check the restaurant exists and advertised the job on Jobsplus. The permit fee is the employer’s; the visa is the only fee you pay, at the mission or its centre.
The money
The minimum wage is €229.44 a week in 2026, about €994 a month. A room costs €450 to €700 a month. Run your own numbers in the salaries guide before you accept. A salary far above the ranges there is a red flag, not a prize.
What never happens
Nobody in Malta charges you for a job. Agencies here are licensed by DIER and commit an offence if they take money from an applicant. Employers may not take money from workers for recruitment. The permit fee is the employer’s. You pay the two official courses, your visa, your health tests and your flight, and nothing else.
